I — The HistoryLa Storia史实

The painter who became ChineseIl pittore che divenne cinese

Giuseppe Castiglione arrived in Beijing in 1715, aged twenty-seven, expecting to convert an empire. Instead the empire converted him.

Born in Milan and trained in the Italian tradition of perspective and volume, he entered the Qing court as a Jesuit lay brother and stayed for fifty-one years, serving three emperors — Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong — under the name Lang Shining.

He did not simply paint in China. He built a third thing that had never existed: Western modelling and depth fused with Chinese brush, silk and mineral pigment. He also designed the European baroque pavilions and fountains of the Old Summer Palace — stone Italy standing inside an imperial Chinese garden.

II — The FilmIl Film影片

Five years, one scrollCinque anni, un rotolo

An epic charting a foreigner's complete immersion into the Forbidden City — told through the making of a single monumental painting.

One Hundred Horses is a handscroll of extraordinary ambition: a hundred animals, each individually observed, running the length of a work meant to be unrolled slowly by one viewer at a time. Castiglione laboured over it for the Yongzheng Emperor across five years of field study, court politics and physical exhaustion.

The film is not about painting. It is about what a man surrenders to be allowed to stay — his language, his mission, his name — and what he builds in its place.
